Ever wonder about the voices you hear on radio ads or narrating TV documentaries? Surprisingly, voiceovers have little to do with the voice and much to do with the intention and thought behind the delivery. If you want greater command of your on-mic voice, this course will help you begin to build the skills needed. There’s ample time on-mic. Learn what it really takes to create compelling voiceovers. FPA Certificate of Completion.

Prerequisite: Orientation Six sessions of 3 hours each

This class has been especially created to accommodate those who require Non-Visual Access. You will learn the basics in technical operations: operating the radio board, the use and mixing of multiple sources, and the aesthetics of proper on-air presentation. Radio cable/web casting is particularly exciting because it is, like show business. Programming is timed down to the second, and precision and speed are crucial for both taped and live broadcasts. This class will teach you to be creative as a producer and how to develop and hold the interest of your listening and viewing audiences. You will also learn how to develop a 30 sec Promo for your show. You will be required to prepare a few mini Radio shows and present them live, on-air as the class progresses.

Prerequisite: Orientation
3 sessions: 3 hours
Certification requires the completion of class project.
Min students: 1, Max students: 2

Writing & Interviewing for TV & Radio Broadcasters

Behind every great Radio or TV broadcast, is great writing. This Writing & Interviewing for Radio & TV class will instruct the student on the proper skills needed to conduct successful live or taped interviews. This class will instruct the student on how to best craft the language of his or her program that will maximize the quality of the Cable broadcast and enjoyment of the listener/viewer. By working with actual examples, students will learn to write effective introductions, and interview questions for use in the studio, or in the field.

Note: Students are encouraged to bring in samples they have used on their Radio or TV shows. Class will work together with the instructor to re-write and improve the samples.

Pre-requisites: Radio or TV Producers or students enrolled in Radio, Studio/Field Package or TV/Radio experience
Min students: 3 Max students: 8

The story goes that if you give a person a fish they will eat for that day; but if you teach a person to fish, you are preparing them for a lifetime of security. This class will teach you to fish for money. It does not guarantee you’ll catch anything, but you’ll know how to fish and you’ll be given all the tools necessary to fish. The class will cover FPA’s rules and policies for program underwriting, targeting potential underwriters, writing proposals and letters to potential funders, budget creation, and in-kind donations vs. cash, underwriting credits, and follow-through.

Prerequisite: One of the following classes (Producer’s Workshop, Studio Package, Field Package, and Video Cinematography for TV or Radio Production)
